INTRODUCTION: The bird life in Ecuador is astonishing! With over 1600 species crammed into such a small country the opportunities to see and photograph so many species of birds are unparalleled anywhere in the world. During a 5 month visit in 2009 I tried to find and photograph as many of Ecuador’s beautiful birds as possible. My goal was to find them in their natural habitat and try to do justice to them in the photos that I would take. This book is the product of this wonderful photographic journey. Because I am a nature lover and conservationist I am concerned about the future of the world’s birds. One of the goals of this book is to raise money to help ensure that these beautiful creatures are still around for our children and grandchildren to see. This book project is a joint effort between myself and The Mindo Cloudforest Foundation (MCF). MCF is an Ecuadorian non-profit conservation group with members from 5 countries. They specialize in linking birding tourism to habitat conservation. 50% of all proceeds from this book will go directly to the Mindo Cloudforest Foundation to aid in their fantastic work towards protecting habitat in Ecuador. We thank you for your support...and so do the birds! ![]() ![]() ![]() |

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID ABOUT THIS BOOK: “There are a lot of bird photographers these days. But rarely have I seen such exquisite bird images as these taken by Glenn Bartley during his time in Ecuador. How Glenn managed to get so much, often of species scarce and sometimes even difficult to see (much less photograph), is a mystery. But we’re all the richer for it. Enjoy this sampling of Ecuador’s avian riches, and never forget that many are rare and even endangered – they and the organizations, governmental and private, working to protect the habitats they require need your support.” Robert S. Ridgely (World Land Trust – US) “Having birded in Ecuador for over 15 years I know how difficult it can be to even glimpse some of these birds. What Glenn Bartley has done here is beyond my belief - capturing the beauty and still retaining the naturalness of some of Ecuador’s most amazing birds. This is as good as it gets! I hope this book inspires everyone who reads it to visit “Glenn Bartley takes us on a visual journey through this avian-rich paradise as active participants in his exciting quest and presents an impressive selection of both widespread and incredibly scarce species. We are fortunate to partner with Glenn in sharing his work for our collective enjoyment and to give something back to the birds!”
MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE MINDO CLOUDFOREST FOUNDATION: Mindo Clouforest Foundation (MCF) is an Ecuadorian non-profit conservation group with members from 5 countries. We specialize in linking birding tourism to habitat conservation. In addition to various community based conservation initiatives, MCF owns and operates two popular bird sanctuaries in the Andean foothills and tropical lowlands - Milpe and Río Silanche respectively. We also pioneered the creation of the Paseo del Quinde – South America’s first Eco-scenic route/birders´ trail. Our bird sanctuaries are part of an altitudinal transect linking the Tropical Andes and Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena biodiversity Hotspots as characterized by Conservation International, and are in or near three Birdlife International designated Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in Northwestern Ecuador. Our lands and activities help protect an important suite of avian species—including 70 regional endemic, 11 vulnerable and 2 endangered species - along with many boreal migrants and species categorized as Near Threatened. In Ecuador there has been a lot of political change since Sept, 2007. A new constitution mentions the rights of the “Paccha Mama” (mother earth in Quichua) and, at least on paper, calls for the defense of the country’s biodiversity. The current government has even initiated some promising programs, e.g. Socio Bosque (Forest Partners) to pay select landowners $30 a hectare per year to maintain native forests. At the same time, the government is especially determined to initiate major mining activities. MCF is meeting the challenge of confronting these shortsighted endeavors by creating incentives that connect habitat conservation with the improvement of local living standards. We believe that an active civil society with members that include conservation organizations helps The foundation commemorated seven years of operations in December, 2008, and updates regarding foundation activities are available for download on our website - www.mindocloudforest.org When MCF president Brian Krohnke met Glenn Bartley at a conference in Texas in 2008, he knew there was a cool opportunity for collaboration. We love Glenn’s work and think it shows some of the best of the Ecuadorian avifauna. Part of the purchase price of this book will help support our efforts. Thank you! President, Brian Krohnke - info@mindocloudforest.org
