AN INTRODUCTION TO THIS PHOTO WORKSHOP

Trinidad is home to some of the most diverse and spectacular bird life in the Caribbean. This variety can be attributed to the island's close proximity to the  tip of South America. Home to the Asa Wright Nature Centre, a world renowned destination for bird watching, Trinidad's size and accessibility to popular sites ensures many species can be seen without long drives or treks. For eco- enthusiasts, Trinidad has more than 450 bird species, 108 types of mammals, 55 reptiles, 25 amphibians and 620 types of butterflies; ranking the island as one of the richest outposts of biodiversity in the Caribbean. You could say that it is South America in a Caribbean Island.

Tobago has over 200 bird species on just 116 square miles of land. The island has several great vantage points for bird watching including the Grafton-Caledonia Wildlife Sanctuary, the Main Ridge Forest Reserve and Little Tobago Island, a small offshore island located just off the village of Speyside. Tobago is home to over 6000 species of plants and animals, including one of the highest densities of bird species in the world .

PHOTO ITINERARY

Our photo adventure starts in Trinidad’s capital of Port of Spain . This unique bustling city integrates nicely with Caribbean culture.  Taking a look around you will see in one direction the beautiful Caribbean Sea and in the other you will see mountains with hillside homes.  The following day, we leave Port of Spain by ferry with Terns and Pelicans nearby to wish us best on our journey over to Tobago.  We will watch the sun rise and may be able to take landscape photographs of lush mountains and beautiful landscapes along the way. Reaching our destination of Tobago we will be entering into a Hummingbird paradise. We will be staying at a lush retreat where hummingbirds will be swarming the feeders and will be waiting for us to photograph them. Here are focus will be on multi-flash hummingbird photography, lighting and how to capture a beautiful, well composed hummingbird flight image . Participants may take a break and go for a short hike around the tropical garden trails and photography other bird species such as the Barred Anstrike, Blue-Crowned Motm ot, Rufous-tailed Jacamar and more. We will also take a break to visit a remote beach to soak up the sun or sit under a palm tree with white sands and bright blue waters. If you like you can even go snorkeling and see tropical fish and take a day to swim in the Caribbean warm waters.  In the evening test your skills with photographing fruit bats.

On our second day on Tobago we will make a morning drive a nearby village. Here you will utilize your photography skills capturing majestic Red-billed Tropicbirds. Capture these gorgeous creatures with an angelic tail flowing behind as they dive down into the ocean to fish. With background settings of high cliffs, tropical hillsides and blue oceans these images are sure to be some of the most spectacular of the trip. On the way back to the boat we may take a short hike and explore the surrounding rainforest trails full of lizards, insects and other treasures.  The next day we will focus all of our efforts on photographing the hummingbirds and garden birds of Tobago before traveling back to Trinidad.

Upon arrival back in Port of Spain we will make our way up steep mountainous roads through the rainforest where you are sure to be left speechless by the beauty of these cliffs and valleys. We will keep watch for parrots and tanagers flying from the fruit trees along the way. After only 2 hours we will reach our next destination – the internationally renound ASA Wright Nature Centre.  Here we will focus on some of the unique bird photography opportunities and be able to take guided tours with the local experts to learn about the plants, trees and birds residing at the centre. The ASA Wright Centre is a gem located 1,200 feet in the mountains of the Northern Range. We will watch the Manakins perform their mating dance by clucking and dancing back and forth.  If you hear a  bell clanging around you as you walk the trail do not be alarmed. This is the simply the call of the bizarre Bearded Bell Bird.  This unique bird with an actual beard is a prize for any bird photographer’s ollection.

After 3 nights at ASA Wright we will finish  our adventure with a journey into the Caroni Swamps where we will have the opportunity to capture the brilliant red -colored Scarlet Ibis. With over 3 ,000 flying through the swamp to settle down for the evening you will surely capture one.  The experience of witnessing this spectacle is beyond words!

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES

On this photo adventure we will focus on the following opportunities:

Multi-flash Hummingbird Photography: Learn techniques to use 4-6 flashes to achieve otherwise impossible flight photographs of these flying jewels. What makes this workshop special is that Glenn will be sharing his techniques for taking multi-flash images that actually look natural (unlike most others out there). Please note that we will be using Canon flashes.  If you shoot with a camera system other than Canon we will have cameras for you to use during this portion of the workshop.

Flight Photography: Learn to photograph birds in flight from one of the World's top photographers. We will focus on photographing the elegant Red-billed Tropicbird as they soar around us.

Using flash effectively as a source of fill light: Because tropical regions are often cloudy - it is extremely important to learn how to use flash - either as fill or as a main source of light. Participants will also learn how to do set-ups for birds using more than one flash. These skills can easily be taken home and applied in your very own backyard!

Attracting birds to a perch setup: Participants will learn strategies to attract birds to a given perch and how to achieve images that have attractive light, an outstanding perch and a smooth background.

Strategies for successful tropical photography: Glenn has spent over a year and a half photographing wildlife in the tropics. Throughout the workshop he will share tips and tricks that he has learned along the way.

Digital Workshops:  During the evenings for those who wish to participate, we will have image review sessions and talk about techniques and what we can expect to see the next day.  In these post processing workshops participants will have ample opportunities to improve skills in Adobe Photoshop.  Guided by Glenn, participants can learn how to take their images from straight out-of-the-camera RAW images to stunning final works of art (ready for printing or websites).
On the last evening, we will give out prizes for the top 3 images of the workshop!
