AN INTRODUCTION TO THIS PHOTO WORKSHOP
For a long time, I’ve thought there would be
potential to bring together three of the most exciting aspects of nature
photography in the southernmost reaches of South America. On this all-new
workshop, we’ll have the opportunity to do just that! From the wild Pumas
that roam free in their mountain realms, to birds and stunning landscapes
of Patagonia, and finally to the Penguins of the Falkland Islands this
trip brings a lot of photographic potential to the table!
PHOTO ITINERARY
On this trip we will focus on some of
the really unique and interesting bird (as well as mammal) photography
destinations that exist in Patagonia and the Falkland Islands. We’ll split
the trip up into birding and landscape opportunities in and around Torres
del Paine in Patagonia. Searching for Pumas in their natural environment.
And finally, visiting a few of the Falkland Islands to get some awesome
Penguin photos. For those interested we’ll also offer a fun day trip from
Santiago to search for Andean Condors and a few other really cool birds that
can be found in the mountains.
This trip will officially start in Punta Arenas in
southern Chile. However, in order to break up the lengthy trip that far
south I thought it would be fun to offer an optional day trip from Santiago
to search for Andean Condors and other cool mountain birds like Moustached
Turca, Scale-throated Earthcreepers and Gray-hooded Sierra Finches.
Once we arrive in Punta Arenas we’ll make our way
towards Torres Del Paine National Park stopping at some nice birding
destinations along the way. This has to be one of the most stunningly
beautiful places in the world. The scenery is truly breathtaking! We’ll
spend our first few days focussing on the unique birdlife that calls
Patagonia home and basking in the stunning scenery.
Up next we’ll spend two and a half days searching for
Pumas on a private reserve. We’ll hire a professional “Puma Tracker” to
really increase our odds of success here. With any luck we’ll be able to
find several of these majestic cats and get some great shots and make some
fantastic memories.
After enjoying the best that Patagonia has to offer,
we’ll travel back to Punta Arenas for the night so that we can catch our
flights out to the Falkland Islands the next day.
Upon arriving in the Falkland Islands, we’ll
immediately travel to one of the smaller outer islands where wildlife
abounds. We’ll have two nights to explore Bleaker Island and get started on
our Penguin portfolio! Of
course, it’s not only Penguins we’ll be after. There are also lots of other
great species of waterfowl, shorebirds, etc. to keep us busy.
After a few days on Bleaker we’ll hop on over to Sea
Lion Island to enjoy some of the unique photography opportunities that this
Island offers. Sea Lion is one of the well-preserved islands without
invasive species and as a result it is home to some of the songbirds that
are absent from other islands. Birds like the Cobb’s Wren and Tussockbird
are certainly possible here. But the stars of the show will continue to be
the adorable Penguins!
After three nights on Sea Lion Island, we’ll travel
back to Stanley and prepare for a fun trip to see King Penguins the
following day. By this point we should have a great collection of images
from this unique part of the world. And as we wrap up the trip in the pub in
Stanley, I’m sure we’ll have created not only some fantastic images, but
also some great memories that will last a lifetime.
It should be a fantastic itinerary filled with great birds and
photo opportunities. I hope you can join me!
